Research Scavenger Hunt

In order to put some of our research and MLA skills into practice, you will need to put together an MLA style work cited page for the sources listed. Some of the sources you will need to find in the databases or on the Internet, while others (like books) will simply require you to find enough information to cite them.

Remember, an MLA work cited page is very particular. You will need to pay attention to your format—margins, font, spacing, hanging indent etc, as well as your citations—the information you provide for each source, the order the information is in, and the order the sources are in. If you are new to this formatting, you have two options:

  1. Visit the OWL’s MLA Sample paper and take a look at the work cited page and the notes they provide on formatting before you begin.
  2. Watch this really stimulating video from “My Essay Tutor” on how to format your works cited page in MLA style.

Your Assignment: Create an MLA works cited page with the sources listed below. You do not need an MLA style heading.  Treat this as if it were the last page of your paper.  It will include a header with your last name, so that will be enough for me to know whose is whose.

From the Databases:

  • A Journal Article entitled: ‘The Living Fabric of the World’: Willa Cather’s Travel Journalism.
  • A Newspaper Article entitled: College World Series Attendance Drops After Schedule Shift

From the Internet:

By Hand:

  • A Book: by Schaufelberger, Donald E. entitled The Only State: A History of Public Power in Nebraska

You can use the Metro Catalogue to look up the book and find all of the information you need to cite this source.

  • An Article in an Anthology: “Let Teenagers Try Adulthood.Use the version in your book as opposed to the version available online.

At the end of your works cited page, create a parenthetical citation for each of the sources.  Put each parenthetical on a new line and keep them in the same order as the works cited entries. Your book explains internal citations on pages 630-633. Keep in mind that electronic sources will not include a page number. Since this is a major assignment it needs to be uploaded to turnitin.com.
